Environment "convenes the meeting of the technical team on assessing the risks of marine climate change"

With the participation of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (Rubmi), the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs opened on Tuesday morning the meeting of the technical team on assessing the risks of marine climate change and in cooperation with the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (Rubmi), in the presence of a number of experts concerned in the Rubmi Sea region and the Middle East program of the Center Environment, fisheries and aquaculture sciences CEFAS. The meeting covered several topics, including the negative effects of climate change on the marine environment, the development of adaptation mechanisms, and the mitigation of those impacts.

Engineer Suleiman bin Nasser Al-Akhzami, Director General of the General Directorate of Nature Conservancy, opened the meeting with experts from the Rubmi Sea region and the British Environmental Science, Hunting and Fish Culture Center. Al-Akhzami mentioned during the meeting that the marine climate is one of the most important contemporary issues, and is one of the environmental problems facing the world due to its direct impact On the marine environment, such as sea level rise, salinity, hurricanes, severe storms, and the death of marine organisms, this requires a major effort to address and mitigate the effects of climate change on the marine environment.

Al-Akhzami referred to the efforts made by the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (Rubmi) and its member states in developing plans and strategies to mitigate the effects of marine climate change to protect the marine environment from adapting to it.

On the other hand, Dr. Hassan Mohammadi, Coordinator of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (Robmi) explained the organization's role in protecting and preserving the vital components of the environment and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, noting the importance of cooperation in the field of limiting the negative impacts of climate change on the marine environment by setting A regional strategy to mitigate and adapt to climate change, due to the apparent impacts on the marine environment from sea level rise, ocean acidification, which led to severe shortages in some marine organisms and an increase in some due to changing chemical and physical characteristics of sea water.

This meeting works to converge views and proposals to come up with best practices for preparing a regional strategy for adaptation and mitigation of climate change impacts.

On the other hand, Eng. Hilal bin Sultan Al Shukaili, Director of the Marine Environment Protection Department, stated the importance of this meeting, which aims to discuss the components of the strategy aimed at studying the status of the marine environment in the Rubmi Sea region today, and to identify marine biodiversity in it and identify areas of economic importance through data collection Marine biological and ecological In view of the rapid economic development in the region in general and the increasing pressures on the marine environment in particular, it is witnessing continuous growth in the field of port development and maritime transport, in addition to the increase of projects and heavy industries on the coastline also with an orientation to develop the fish farming sector to diversify the sources of income Therefore, it has become necessary to develop an adaptation strategy and mitigate the effects of climate changes on the marine environment and identify areas with environmental sensitivity and threatened marine organisms that exist in the waters of the region.
