The Sultanate of Oman participates in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Environment Program

The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Agency, participated in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya. His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Omari, President of the Environment Agency, headed the Sultanate’s delegation participating in the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, which aims to promote actions for nature to achieve sustainable development goals. His Excellency delivered a speech by the Sultanate of Oman in which he valued the distinguished environmental work carried out by the presidency of the Fifth General Assembly of UNEP and the various committees and work teams of permanent delegates and specialists in the delegations of countries, which yesterday resulted in a number of important historical decisions, which, if implemented, will have a profound positive impact on The sustainability of the environment and natural resources, at the forefront of which comes the decision to reduce plastic and its uses. His Excellency pointed out that we in the Sultanate of Oman have started decades ago in diligent work to conserve biodiversity through the establishment of terrestrial and marine nature reserves, as well as by launching projects for breeding and genetic conservation projects for species, and our belief in the importance of international partnership in strengthening environmental systems and preserving their natural resources, and in achieving the goals of sustainable development. . He added that the Sultanate of Oman launched the Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation in 1986, which is the first Arab award to be awarded at the global level; As a contribution to raising global awareness towards the environment and the importance of preserving it. To complement the environmental efforts, we issued a decision two years ago to ban the use of single-use plastic bags as a first stage on the road to limiting the spread of plastic, in addition to establishing legislation and intensifying oversight over the mining sector to ensure development without prejudice to the environmental system around it. ترأس سعادة الدكتور عبدالله بن علي العمري رئيس هيئة البيئة وفد السلطنة المشارك في الدورة الخامسة لجمعية الأمم المتحدة للبيئة في مدينة نيروبي بجمهورية كينيا، و التي تهدف الى تعزيز الإجراءات من أجل الطبيعة لتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة، وكما سيتم خلال الدورة الاحتفال بالذكرى الخمسين لتأسيس برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة. وقد ألقى سعادة الدكتور رئيس هيئة البيئة كلمة سلطنة عمان أمام الجمعية، أكد فيها: إن اهتمام سلطنة عمان بحماية الطبيعة وصون مواردها نهج متأصل في الثقافة العمانية وهو أحد ثوابت نهج الحكومة الساعي لتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة، ويتمثل هذا الاهتمام في قواعد الادارة البيئية التي توازن بين متطلبات التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والطموح المستقبلي لسلطنة عمان لمواكبة المستجدات على الساحة العالمية مما يجعل البيئة وصون مواردها الطبيعية نقطة ارتكاز للسياسات والتشريعات الوطنية. وأضاف سعادته: أن الجهود التي تبذلها هيئة البيئة بسلطنة عمان متمثلةً في حزم البرامج والمشاريع التي من أبرزها المبادرة الوطنية لزراعة 10 ملايين شجرة لتعزيز استدامة الغطاء النباتي وموائل الحياة الفطرية ووضع وتطوير استراتيجية عمان للبيئة التي ستؤطر مبادئ ومنهجيات الاقتصاد الدائري والاخضر، وتنظيم قطاع السياحة البيئية، وان الاعلان عن محمية خور خرفوت الاثري جاء مكملاً للجهود المبذولة لصون الطبيعة والحياة الفطرية لتضاف الى قائمة المحميات الطبيعية التي بلغ عددها 25 محمية طبيعية. وقال سعادة العمري: انطلاقا من اهداف "رؤية عُمان 2040" في استثمار الفرص المتاحة وحماية الموارد الطبيعية فقد تم تدشين محطة (عبري) للطاقة الشمسة كأحد أكبر مشاريع الطاقة المتجددة في سلطنة عمان بسعة 500 ميجاواط لتنويع مصادر التزود بالكهرباء، والإسهام في خفض الانبعاثات الكربونية ، و قد قامت سلطنة عمان ممثلة بهيئة البيئة أيضا بتنفيذ عددا من المشاريع والدراسات والبرامج البيئية الهادفة للحفاظ على البيئية و التي تنوعت بين تحديث التشريعات و القوانين لمواكبة المستجدات و الدراسات البحثية على الملوثات و انشاء شبكات الرصد و المراقبة.

National Workshop on Preparing an action plan, a roadmap for the integrated management of chemicals

The Environment Agency, represented by the Department of Chemicals and Waste Management at the General Directorate of Environmental Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, is organizing a national workshop on “Preparing a roadmap for the integrated management of chemicals” during the period 22-24 February 2022 AD in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. The opening ceremony of the national workshop is held under the patronage of His Excellency Salim bin Ali bin Salim Al Hakmani, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority. The workshop aims to enhance the sound and integrated management of chemicals in the Sultanate of Oman, expand partnership with government agencies and international organizations concerned with chemicals management, in addition to developing an action plan to implement a roadmap at the national level to enhance the participation of the health and environment sector in the strategic approach to international chemicals management. This is in addition to identifying the existing gaps and challenges, which helps to take clear and accurate actions by the decision maker to manage chemicals and reduce their risks, considering chemicals as one of the important elements in the daily life of society and which constitute major inputs in most industrial and development fields, to keep pace with the development witnessed by the movement economic development in the Sultanate of Oman, supporting the national economy and advancing investment, as well as raising indicators and efficiency of monitoring and control of chemicals, which contribute to achieving strategic goals in the priority of environment and natural resources, and the priority of health in Oman Vision 2040, as well as achieving the ninth goal of the third goal of sustainable development 2030, and one of The nine goals in the Arab strategy for health and Environment (2017-2030).
